Windows users are told to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bIn1BREwbW0\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bIn1BREwbW0\" target=\"_blank\">install programs like BlindScanner<\/a>, additional <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dyV93ZRV2DU\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dyV93ZRV2DU\" target=\"_blank\">network devices are advertised<\/a>, and even Linux users are (mis-)guided to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dyV93ZRV2DU\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dyV93ZRV2DU\" target=\"_blank\">connect to their network scanners via CUPS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time there is a clean and simple solution to share scanners among Linux devices with free open source software: Just use SANE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend following the instructions in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linux.com\/news\/how-share-scanner-your-network\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.linux.com\/news\/how-share-scanner-your-network\/\" target=\"_blank\">How to share a scanner on your network <\/a>by Manolis Tzanidakis on Linux.com. Even though the article dates back to 2006, it still is extremely useful and the only amendment I had to make to share a scanner connected to the current Ubuntu 20.04 LTS system was to replace the deprecated inetd \/ xinetd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-urvanov-syntax-highlighter-code-block\"><pre class=\"theme:terminal font:ubuntu-mono lang:default decode:true \" title=\"Deprecated inted command to enable saned\" >sane-port stream tcp nowait saned.saned \/usr\/sbin\/saned saned<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>we need to issue the following command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-urvanov-syntax-highlighter-code-block\"><pre class=\"theme:terminal font:ubuntu-mono lang:default decode:true \" title=\"Current command to start and enable saned\" >sudo systemctl start saned.socket\nsudo systemctl enable saned.socket\n<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This will advertise the scanner over the local network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I actually tried that it works by connecting a Raspberry Pi that ran Mayan EDMS under Ubuntu to my sane compliant Samsung SCX-4263 scanner which was physically hooked to another machine on the network.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a lot of confusing instructions circling around regarding network sharing of scanners.
